Ronnie O’Sullivan set to make snooker history

Ronnie O’Sullivan is set to make snooker history this May by attempting something no player has ever achieved – winning both the World Championship and the World Seniors title in the same week at the Crucible, reports BritPanorama.

The seven-time world champion, who celebrated his 50th birthday in December, has confirmed his participation in the seniors event, which kicks off on 6 May – just two days after the main tournament concludes.

This marks O’Sullivan’s debut in the seniors competition, where he will be pursuing a record-breaking eighth world crown before shifting focus to the seniors event.

The seniors tournament has seen a significant change in eligibility criteria, allowing players aged 45 and over who are ranked within the world’s top 64 to compete. This adjustment has attracted a formidable lineup, featuring active professionals.

Among the notable contenders is fellow legend Mark Williams, alongside 2015 world champion Stuart Bingham, former Masters and UK champion Matthew Stevens, and two-time ranking event winner Robert Milkins. This development promises an unprecedented level of competition, creating excitement among fans eager to see the sport’s legends in action.

World Seniors Snooker Tour chairman Jason Francis expressed enthusiasm about O’Sullivan’s participation, stating, “The most commercially valuable player the sport has ever seen will make his seniors debut at the Crucible in May in an attempt to add another world title to his CV – wow!”

Ticket sales have already exceeded last year’s total, with Francis anticipating further demand following the Rocket’s announcement. The strength of this seniors field reads like a who’s who of snooker royalty, highlighting the event’s appeal.

Additionally, Jimmy White, the most successful player in the event’s history, will be aiming to secure his fifth title, while defending champion Alfie Burden seeks to retain his crown. The tournament will also feature 12-time women’s world champion Reanne Evans, alongside Ireland’s Ken Doherty and current Seniors British Open champion Joe Perry, promising an engaging week for snooker fans.

The tournament runs from 6-10 May in Sheffield and will be broadcast live on Channel 5.

As the Crucible prepares to host this historic dual event, it serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of snooker and the unique narratives that arise when legendary players redefine the boundaries of their sport.
