Rio Ferdinand defends Casemiro against Carragher’s criticism

Rio Ferdinand has hit back at pundit Jamie Carragher, blasting the former Liverpool defender as “highly disrespectful” for his comments on a Manchester United star, reports BritPanorama.

Casemiro has shown a notable resurgence recently, helping Manchester United secure three consecutive victories in the Premier League and contributing to a more robust backline. The Brazilian midfielder, signed for £60 million three years ago, is increasingly reminding fans of his past form, including his trophy-laden spell at Real Madrid, where he won five Champions League titles.

Ferdinand highlighted the turnaround in Casemiro’s performances during a recent episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. “He built a stellar career, a five-time Champions League-winning career on the back of being the glue, the person that knitted the backline and midfield together,” he said, noting the importance of the Brazilian’s ability to manage defensive responsibilities effectively.

The context of Carragher’s earlier criticisms comes from a difficult period for United under former manager Erik Ten Hag. In particular, a 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace in May 2024, during which Casemiro started in an unfamiliar position, drew harsh comments from Carragher. At that time, he suggested that Casemiro’s performances had deteriorated to the point where he should consider retirement, asserting, “The football has left him – he needs to call it a day.”

Ferdinand, reflecting on the recent criticism, emphasized that it was “highly disrespectful” to question the capabilities of a player with Casemiro’s achievements. “Players lose confidence, players lose form. But I think the call was too early, and it was highly disrespectful for someone that has achieved so much in the game,” he remarked. He went on to acknowledge the complexities within a team environment, suggesting that systemic issues rather than individual failings had contributed to Casemiro’s struggles.

Drawing from Casemiro’s recent upturn in form, Ferdinand pointed out that the alteration in team dynamics has played a role in the midfielder’s revival. “You don’t win five Champions Leagues without resilience, character and work ethic. Now, he’s the reference point for any player that’s going through a hard time at this football club.”

This unfolding narrative illustrates the often complicated relationship between player performance and external critique. As Casemiro continues to find his footing, Ferdinand’s insights remind fans and analysts alike of the fine line between honest evaluation and derogatory dismissal.
