Richard Keys addresses claims surrounding ex-wife’s cancer

Richard Keys has contested longstanding claims regarding his separation from ex-wife Julia, asserting he did not abandon her amid a cancer battle, reports BritPanorama.

The former Sky Sports presenter clarified that Julia’s thyroid cancer diagnosis occurred years prior to their split, specifically not during their 2016 separation as widely reported.

“I didn’t leave Julia dying of cancer, or suffering with cancer,” he told the Telegraph. “Sadly, she had cancer in 2008 and ’09, and we ran into a genius surgeon who removed it.”

During her treatment, Keys recounted dedicating 30 consecutive days to locating top specialists and hospitals. He revealed he was working at Arsenal on the day of her operation, aiming to avoid drawing unnecessary public attention to her condition.

Keys also addressed misconceptions surrounding his 2023 marriage to Lucie Rose, who is 31 years his junior. He dismissed any insinuations that he had coerced his daughter’s friend into a relationship, stating, “What’s damaging is that people presume I ran away with my daughter’s best mate, locked her in a room, and gave her no choice about whether she wanted to be with me or not. All of which is nonsense.”

Describing Lucie as a “formidable individual”, he noted her strong convictions and passion for women’s rights. “People see me as an easy target, but the narrative is not fair on her. It’s totally wrong,” he added.

Julia Keys, who stayed with her husband following his controversial exit from Sky Sports in 2011 over remarks about female referee Sian Massey-Ellis, published her own perspective on their marriage’s breakdown. Her 2018 book, The MANScript, detailed the impact of infidelity on their family, stating, “Richard’s affair didn’t just devastate my world, but the world of our children Jemma and Josh too.”

She noted that Keys only acknowledged the affair with Lucie two years post-separation, addressing the distress his dishonesty caused. Julia shared the additional challenges she faced during that period, which included her cancer treatment, caregiving for her dying mother, managing her father’s dementia, and supporting daughter Jemma through alcoholism struggles.

Clarifying the nature of the relationship between Lucie and his daughter Jemma, Keys indicated that they had socialised together but were not as close as often depicted.

He also acknowledged the anger that arose when the affair was revealed, which ultimately ended their 36-year marriage. Now approaching 70, Keys expressed a desire to have more children with Lucie. “If something of that nature happened, I would be a very, very happy man,” he remarked, noting that older fathers often appear more relaxed in the role.

Reflections on life, relationships, and past decisions linger here—a reminder of how personal narratives unfold in the public eye, often with little regard for the complexities behind them. Keys’ story serves as a telling example of the intersection between public persona and private realities in today’s media landscape.
