Riccardo Patrese offers insight on Michael Schumacher’s condition

Riccardo Patrese, who raced alongside Michael Schumacher during their time at Benetton, has provided a rare perspective on the German’s health more than a decade after his severe skiing accident, reports BritPanorama.

Patrese believes Schumacher may remain unaware of his remarkable achievements as a seven-time Formula 1 world champion. Speaking to Hochge Pokert, he stated, “I am sure he does not know he is a seven-time world champion.”

Schumacher has faced severe health challenges since December 2013, when he suffered a critical head injury after colliding with a rock while skiing in the French Alps. Following the accident, he spent several months in a medically induced coma before returning to his residence on Lake Geneva.

Patrese described Schumacher as existing “in his own world” yet having the ability to recognise those close to him. He noted improvements in Schumacher’s condition, mentioning reports that the former driver is no longer confined to bed rest; he can now sit upright and communicate through eye contact.

Despite these positive updates, Patrese conceded that he hasn’t visited Schumacher since the accident, gathering his insights from mutual acquaintances rather than direct observation. “He recognises people around him, familiar faces,” Patrese explained, expressing his hope for Schumacher’s ongoing recovery.

Throughout this journey, Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, and a devoted medical team have overseen his care. Reflecting on their commitment, Patrese remarked, “I think in this kind of situation, it is a treasure for the person that they love.” He also recalled a time when there were fears for Schumacher’s survival, making his enduring presence a source of solace for his family.

While acknowledging improvements, Patrese remains cautious about overestimating significant changes in Schumacher’s condition, stating, “I’m very happy to hear that Michael is improving but from what I know of this situation nothing has changed for some years.” This sentiment underscores the persistent challenge of understanding the nuances of Schumacher’s health, especially as his inner circle has tightly guarded his privacy since the tragic incident.

The seven-time champion shares the record for the most world championships with Lewis Hamilton, having claimed titles in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. The situation continues to serve as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring legacy of a sports legend.
