Real Madrid investigates Nazi salute incident during Champions League match
Real Madrid has initiated an investigation into a supporter who reportedly performed a Nazi salute before Wednesday evening’s Champions League match against Benfica, reports BritPanorama.
The incident took place at the Santiago Bernabeu during pre-match proceedings, which notably included the display of a large “No To Racism” banner. Television cameras captured the supporter making the offensive gesture within the stands of the 83,000-capacity venue.
In response, the club has acted swiftly, launching disciplinary proceedings against the individual. Security personnel identified the supporter after the footage aired and promptly removed them from their seat.
In an official statement, Real Madrid confirmed that it had “urgently requested the club’s Disciplinary Committee to initiate an immediate expulsion procedure for the member who was caught on television cameras performing the Nazi salute in the area where the Animation Stand is located, moments before the start of the match between Real Madrid and Benfica.”
The Spanish club emphasized its firm stance against such behaviour, stating that they “condemn this type of gesture and expression that incites violence and hatred in sports and society.” According to The Athletic, while performing a Nazi salute is not classified as a criminal offence under Spanish law, it could be subject to penalties if associated with other acts of hate.
On the pitch, Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory in the second leg against Benfica, allowing them to progress further in the competition they have won 15 times. Vinicius Junior’s second goal confirmed their advancement to the knockout stages. The club looks forward to facing either Manchester City or Sporting Lisbon in a highly anticipated last-16 encounter.
This match was preceded by accusations of racist abuse directed at Vinicius during the first leg in Lisbon, with Benfica’s Argentine midfielder Gianluca Prestianni alleged to have used derogatory language towards him—a claim that Prestianni has denied. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois voiced his concerns about the events observed during matches, highlighting the need for officials to ensure spectator behaviour does not overshadow the game itself.
As this incident unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the continuous challenge sports face in addressing hate and discrimination, even as they strive for inclusivity and respect.
