Ray Parlour responds to ‘boring’ chants at World Darts Championship

Ray Parlour provided a memorable response to a crowd branding him “boring” during the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace by swiftly downing a pint, reports BritPanorama.

The former Arsenal star was among thousands gathered at Ally Pally for the closing matches of the first round on Friday. Quick to draw attention, his grin lit up the venue’s big screens as chants erupted from the spectators.

Parlour, 52, known as the “Romford Pele,” began as a composed figure, lifting two plastic cups and taking a modest sip. However, the atmosphere quickly shifted as chants of “boring, boring, Parlour” reverberated around the north London venue, a place where crowd expectations run high.

With restraint proving ineffective, the former midfielder realised he needed to engage more directly. Moments later, he stood up with a pint in hand, showcasing a decisive shift in approach. In footage shared on social media, Parlour drained the pint in approximately twelve seconds, igniting a raucous cheer of approval from the audience.

Reassured by the crowd’s reaction, he returned to his seat, reputation intact, to witness the remaining action of the tournament. This incident encapsulated the unique fusion of sporting drama and pub culture inherent to darts.

The championship has long been a celebration for fans, many treating the occasion as an endurance test. It’s estimated that around 750,000 pints are consumed at Alexandra Palace throughout the competition, with even more likely enjoyed on the way there.

Prominent figures from the world of sport joined in on the festivities, with former Premier League striker Peter Crouch amusing the crowd by downing a pint and balancing the empty cup on his head. The event’s atmosphere attracted a variety of personalities, including Lionesses captain Leah Williamson and UFC lightweight star Paddy Pimblett.

For Parlour, the crowd’s reaction was not unexpected. With over 450 appearances for Arsenal and three Premier League titles to his name, it was clear that Gunners fans appreciated seeing an old favourite fully embrace the spirit of the darts.

Such moments remind us how seamlessly sport and entertainment intertwine, drawing together diverse faces in a celebration of camaraderie and passion.
