Rafael Nadal undergoes hand surgery

Rafael Nadal has gone under the knife once again, this time for a long-standing hand problem that’s been causing him grief, reports BritPanorama.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner had surgery in Barcelona to tackle severe osteoarthritis affecting the trapeziometacarpal joint in his right hand. The procedure, known as an arthroplasty, was designed to ease his pain and restore proper mobility to the joint.

Dr Alex Lluch performed the operation at Teknon Medical Centre, with Nadal’s personal physician Angel Ruiz-Cotorro and Dr Vilaro overseeing the procedure. This operation adds to a series of physical setbacks that have marked Nadal’s illustrious career.

In a light-hearted announcement on social media, Nadal commented on his latest setback, stating, “Looks like I won’t be able to play the @AustralianOpen 2026 I had to undergo hand surgery because of an issue I’d been dealing with for a long time, but I hope to be fine soon!”

Though he’s facing another medical hurdle, Nadal’s spirit remains undiminished. Meanwhile, his longtime rival Roger Federer is set to participate in the Australian Open’s first-ever Opening Ceremony, where he will play in an exhibition featuring tennis legends like Andre Agassi and Pat Rafter.

Recently, Nadal celebrated a year since retiring from professional play at the Davis Cup Finals. He returned to the court to hit some balls with rising star Alexandra Eala at his academy in Mallorca, sharing the experience online and expressing his eagerness to return to competitive form.

This latest surgery comes just as Nadal is slated to serve as an ambassador for the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah. He noted, “Coming back to Jeddah for the Next Gen ATP Finals is something I am looking forward to. I’ve been given the warmest of welcomes in Saudi Arabia and I feel there is a real energy for tennis.”

Nadal’s commitment to nurturing young talent remains strong, underscoring his goal to inspire the next generation not just in Saudi Arabia but across the globe. His enduring presence in the tennis world, despite the setbacks, continues to resonate with fans and aspiring players alike.

It’s a remarkable embodiment of resilience, a reminder that the spirit of competition often endures through trials, both physical and personal.
