Everton defender acquires protection dog amid rising security concerns
Everton defender Jake O’Brien has purchased a protection dog to safeguard his family amid growing security concerns among Premier League footballers, reports BritPanorama.
The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international acquired Knox, a black German Shepherd, from the specialist firm Chaperone K9 following recommendations from fellow players.
This decision aims to ensure the safety of his girlfriend, Sophie Lawlor, and their infant son, Greyson, while he fulfils his football commitments. O’Brien emphasised that maintaining family security during his absences is his primary concern.
Describing Knox as an optimal security solution, O’Brien highlighted the animal’s loyalty and protective instincts as crucial factors in his purchase decision. This acquisition follows numerous high-profile burglaries targeting Premier League players, including O’Brien’s current Everton colleague Jack Grealish.
Grealish suffered a significant break-in at his £5.6 million Cheshire residence in December 2023, where thieves stole jewellery valued at £1 million. The incident occurred while he was representing Manchester City against Everton on Boxing Day.
The situation has left many footballers, including Grealish, shaken. He expressed his distress on social media, stating, “This has been a traumatic experience for all of us, I am just so grateful that nobody was hurt.” The risk of security threats extends beyond individual players, with organised crime targeting elite footballers increasingly prevalent.
Kevin De Bruyne and Kurt Zouma have also faced similar ordeals, and the issue of heightened security concerns has become a pressing topic within the sport, particularly since the 2023 Qatar World Cup period.

Cheshire’s affluent ‘Golden Triangle’ has become a prime target for international criminal networks, with authorities estimating that up to 500 burglars from countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Peru enter Britain annually to target luxury properties.
O’Brien explained that security is crucial for high-profile individuals, asserting, “Not just for you but for your family, knowing that if I’m away for whatever reason, my family are safe at home.” He considers trained protection dogs to be one of the most effective security measures available, combining a protective edge with the quality of a family pet.
