Police investigate claims of assault by Arsenal fans on Everton players’ friends during match

Joint police investigation launched following disturbance at Emirates Stadium

Metropolitan and Merseyside Police have opened a joint investigation into a disturbance at Emirates Stadium following allegations by Everton forward Thierno Barry that his friends were assaulted during Saturday’s Premier League fixture, reports BritPanorama.

The 23-year-old French striker, who entered the match as a second-half substitute replacing Beto, shared video footage on Instagram showing a physical confrontation among supporters in the away section towards the end of Arsenal’s 2-0 victory, which included goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Max Dowman.

Barry expressed his frustration in an Instagram post, stating, “This kind of behaviour is not acceptable in a stadium. I bring my friends to enjoy a game, and it gets ruined by a few silly people,” adding that football should be a safe space for all spectators.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that officers and stewards responded to the scene, noting that no serious injuries were reported and no arrests were made. The situation prompted both football clubs to engage with police to identify individuals involved. Merseyside Police acknowledged footage circulating online and reaffirmed their collaboration with the Met on the investigation.

Witnesses or anyone involved in the incident have been urged to contact Merseyside Police via their X account @MerPolCC, quoting reference 26000206746. Everton issued a statement stating they are aware of the incident and are reviewing the circumstances, firmly condemning any disorderly behaviour that detracts from the ethos of football.

In a later post, Barry clarified that those with him were staunch supporters of his career and had not sought out Arsenal tickets, countering misconceptions about the incident. Emphasizing the significance of respect and safety in football, he concluded, “I simply want to remind everyone that violence has no place in football, regardless of the circumstances.” An investigation is underway, with Barry confident in the authorities’ ability to determine the facts while respecting the ongoing process.

As this situation unfolds, it raises poignant questions about the culture surrounding matchday experiences in football, reminding us how quickly joy can turn into chaos amidst the fervour of competition.
