Players evacuate during UAE tennis tournament after nearby drone strike ignites fire at oil facility

Professional tennis tournament in UAE interrupted by Iranian drone strike

Play at a professional tennis tournament in the United Arab Emirates was brought to an abrupt halt this morning following an Iranian drone strike that ignited a blaze at a nearby oil facility, reports BritPanorama.

The incident occurred in Fujairah, approximately 90 miles south-east of Dubai, where Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles targeted installations within the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone. Competitors and match officials quickly evacuated the court as warning sirens sounded, with military aircraft later observed in the area.

Local authorities have confirmed that the fire resulted from debris falling after air defense systems successfully intercepted an incoming drone. A live broadcast on the ATP’s website captured the dramatic moment when players Hayato Matsuoka and Daniil Ostapenkov fled the court alongside officials.

The ATP subsequently announced that all remaining matches for the day had been cancelled. “The health, safety and wellbeing of our players, staff and tournament personnel is our priority,” a governing body statement read. “Following consultation with local authorities and security advisers, play has been cancelled for the remainder of the day as a precautionary measure.”

This drone attack is part of a broader pattern of Iranian military actions, reportedly in retaliation for recent American and Israeli operations that claimed the life of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Over the past three days, Iranian forces have initiated a series of attacks across the Emirates.

Significant damage has been reported at military installations in Abu Dhabi, while tourist sites in Dubai have also been affected. The Fujairah Media Office confirmed that no injuries occurred in today’s incident, reinstating normal operations after the fire was contained.

The disruption has had immediate repercussions for tennis players, with several now stranded in the region due to the closure of airspace. World number five Daniil Medvedev, who won the Dubai Championships via walkover, and fellow Russian Andrey Rublev are among those unable to travel to the upcoming Indian Wells tournament in California. Additionally, the scheduled cricket tour of the England Lions to Abu Dhabi has been entirely cancelled due to the ongoing uncertainty.

Meanwhile, officials from Formula 1 are diligently monitoring the situation in anticipation of scheduled races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia next month, with alternative travel plans being made for personnel.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the intersection of sport and high-stakes international politics, where the backdrop of competition can suddenly shift under the weight of conflict.
