Pierre Crinon suspended from Winter Olympics after altercation with Tom Wilson
Pierre Crinon has been suspended from the remainder of the Winter Olympics by the French Ice Hockey Federation following his on-ice confrontation with Canada’s Tom Wilson during a 10-2 defeat, reports BritPanorama.
The incident, which escalated into the first brawl at an Olympic ice hockey tournament since 1998, occurred after Crinon struck Canadian star Nathan MacKinnon with a forearm, prompting Wilson to retaliate. Both players were immediately ejected, as fighting results in automatic dismissal under Olympic rules, in stark contrast to the NHL.
Despite no further penalties being imposed by Olympic officials, the French Ice Hockey Federation (FFHG) took internal action. FFHG president Pierre-Yves Gerbeau discussed the situation with Crinon and senior officials, concluding that his behaviour upon leaving the ice was a violation of Olympic values.
The FFHG stated: “Pierre Crinon’s provocative behaviour upon leaving the ice, even though he had just been ejected from the game for fighting, constitutes a clear violation of the Olympic spirit and also undermines the values of our sport.” This decision reflects the federation’s commitment to uphold proper standards for those representing France.
With Crinon unavailable for the upcoming elimination match against Germany, France faces critical challenges, having lost all three preliminary round matches. The team has yet to find its footing, enduring a disappointing shutout against Switzerland and a narrow defeat to the Czech Republic.
