Phil Mickelson Engages in Immigration Debate on Social Media
Phil Mickelson has found himself at the centre of another political storm after launching into a heated exchange about immigration enforcement on social media, reports BritPanorama.
The veteran golfer fired back at New York congressman Dan Goldman, who urged the NYPD to intervene if federal agents acted unlawfully against New Yorkers. Goldman’s comments came in the wake of ongoing tensions regarding immigration enforcement in the state.
On social media, Mickelson responded, stating: “No one is above the law — not ICE, not CBP, and not Donald Trump. Federal agents who assault or detain New Yorkers without legal authority must be held accountable and the NYPD must protect our neighbours if the federal government refuses to.”
“This is amazing,” Mickelson wrote on X in reaction. “You can threaten to arrest federal officers, ignore victim’s needs, but illegals committing crimes are free to go. You don’t even see the problem here. THAT’S THE PROBLEM!!”
When challenged about people being unlawfully detained by federal agents, the 55-year-old doubled down: “Illegally is how they entered the country, not their detainment.” This marks not the first time Mickelson has voiced his political opinions, as he previously targeted protests against President Trump’s administration.
Mickelson’s recent comments came amidst widespread demonstrations in support of immigration reform, which saw millions of Americans taking to the streets. He expressed disdain for those protests, mockingly suggesting they were ineffective, and praised gatherings in memory of Charlie Kirk, a conservative figure whose recent assassination has sparked debate.
“With all these people no one is lying in streets blocking traffic, no violence, no fires or looting. Just a peaceful gathering to honour a special man,” he noted on social media. He also condemned those who had supported Tyler Robinson, who was apprehended after a shooting linked to the Kirk incident.
His social media activity raises questions about the role of public figures in political discourse, particularly in moments of social upheaval. Mickelson’s views on law enforcement and immigration have attracted attention, with critics accusing him of espousing a one-sided political agenda.
As the landscape of public opinion continues to shift, Mickelson’s comments highlight the ongoing polarisation in discussions surrounding immigration and law enforcement in the United States. It is a reminder of how sports figures can influence conversations that position them at the crossroads of politics and public life.
