Phil Foden’s international struggles raise questions ahead of World Cup

Phil Foden, one of English football’s most promising talents, is facing an uphill battle to secure his place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming World Cup. Following a disappointing performance in a recent match against Japan, the 25-year-old’s chances of participating this summer are uncertain, reports BritPanorama.

Since making his debut for England six years ago, Foden has struggled to find his footing on the international stage. Deployed as a false nine against Japan in the absence of Harry Kane, his contribution was minimal—he failed to register a shot on goal and had fewer touches than any teammate, including goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, by the second half.

Tuchel substituted Foden after just 59 minutes, indicative of a night that saw England succumb to defeat. The England squad boasts considerable attacking talent, yet Foden’s international career has yet to ignite, raising concerns over his future with the national side.

His positional flexibility, while a strength at club level, has become a hindrance for England. The No 10 role has often been occupied by Jude Bellingham or adapted for other players, forcing Foden to the left wing. This restricts his contribution, particularly when the team lacks an overlapping full-back to create space for his incursions.

Throughout the 2022 World Cup, it was notable to observers that Gareth Southgate opted not to give Foden a central role, which could better suit his style. This has often left him in situations where his dynamism is stifled by congested opposition defenses.

Beyond tactical limitations, there appears to be a mental barrier for Foden. When given responsibility, he may struggle to maintain the composure that has made him a key player for Manchester City, often forcing plays that hinder his natural game. Both Southgate and Tuchel have endeavored to evoke the ‘Manchester City Foden’ on the international scene, yet success remains elusive.

The presence of formidable talent such as Bellingham, alongside the creative prowess from supporting players like Cole Palmer, complicates Foden’s path to the World Cup squad. His rivals are thriving, positioning them as near-certainties to make the roster regardless of managerial conflicts.

As England prepares for the World Cup, Foden’s options appear increasingly limited, with competition in every forward position. For the time being, the concern is shifting from merely how he is utilized to whether he may miss an opportunity entirely. With just one goal and two assists in 14 major competition matches, the pressure mounts for a player who has yet to realize his potential on the international stage.

In the world of football, talent alone does not guarantee success; it’s a painful reminder of how even the brightest stars can struggle to find their place amid fierce competition.
