Peter Wright exits World Darts Championship in shock defeat

Peter Wright has crashed out of the World Darts Championship after claiming he was definitely going to win the tournament, reports BritPanorama.

The two-time champion, dressed in a Santa outfit, was unable to spread any festive cheer as German debutant Arno Merk secured a decisive 3-0 victory, eliminating Wright from the competition.

Wright’s performance fell short, with an average of just 79.20, a stark contrast to the expectations he had set for himself. The defeat also quashed the prospect of a tantalising third-round clash with fellow competitor Michael van Gerwen, which many had anticipated as a repeat of the 2020 final.

In the lead-up to the match, Wright had engaged in a verbal exchange with Van Gerwen, suggesting the Dutch player’s eyesight was deteriorating. Van Gerwen shot back, referencing his dating life as proof of his visual acuity. Meanwhile, Merk expressed his disbelief post-match, stating, “I am stunned, I can’t believe it, I just beat a legend, I am so happy.”

Wright, who previously lifted the coveted Sid Waddell Trophy in both the 2019/2020 and 2021/22 seasons, acknowledged the disappointment but remained hopeful: “I know that best version of myself is still there. That’s why I’m still here. I know I’m going to win it.”

Earlier matches in the tournament showcased competitive spirit, with Jermaine Wattimena narrowly defeating Scott Williams and Callan Rydz emerging victorious against Daryl Gurney. Ryan Meikle also claimed a dramatic comeback against Jonny Tata.

Wright’s exit highlights the unpredictable nature of the sport, reminding fans that even champions face unexpected hurdles in their paths.
