PETA calls for abolition of Grand National after racehorse Gold Dancer's fatal injury

Gold Dancer euthanised after Aintree victory

Gold Dancer, a seven-year-old gelding trained by Willie Mullins, was euthanised following a catastrophic spinal injury sustained during the Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree. The horse, ridden by Paul Townend, crossed the finish line four and three-quarter lengths ahead of Regent’s Stroll, but the injury became apparent after an awkward landing at the final fence, reports BritPanorama.

The 100-30 joint-favourite finished the three-mile contest on Ladies Day but was seen dragging his hind legs after jumping the final obstacle. This tragic incident has reignited debate surrounding the safety of racing at Aintree.

PETA has responded by renewing its calls for the abolition of the Grand National, citing Gold Dancer’s death as a stark reminder of the risks involved in the event. The organisation claims this incident brings the total number of horses killed at the Aintree festival to 68 since 2000.

Elisa Allen, Vice President of PETA, stated: “Britain must call ‘time of death’ on the Grand National or rename it for what it is, the Grand Massacre.” She accused the racing industry of systemic issues, alleging that around 200 horses die annually across British racecourses from various causes.

Eddie O’Leary of Gigginstown, Gold Dancer’s owner, confirmed the horse broke his back and described the victory as “hollow.” He further noted, “It’s terribly sad for the horse. The poor horse didn’t deserve that.”

Aintree Racecourse’s veterinary team attended to Gold Dancer immediately but confirmed later that “sadly he could not be saved.” Jockey Townend was unaware of any issues during the race, indicating that the injury only became evident afterward.

The British Horseracing Authority has yet to respond to PETA’s demands while the racing community continues to reflect on the implications of Gold Dancer’s tragic passing, reminding all involved of the inherent risks present in such high-stakes sport. In an arena where fortune and tragedy can collide in an instant, the loss of a competitor like Gold Dancer leaves lingering questions about the future of the sport and the animals that drive its excitement.
