Pep Guardiola considers future after Carabao Cup final
Pep Guardiola plans to step back from Manchester City to decide on his future after this weekend’s Carabao Cup final clash with Arsenal at Wembley is out of the way, reports BritPanorama.
The Spaniard has dominated at the Etihad Stadium since 2016, securing six Premier League titles during his tenure. However, following City’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid on Tuesday night, Guardiola’s future is shrouded in uncertainty.
In November 2024, Guardiola surprised many by signing a new contract while the team was experiencing consistency issues. City have continued to alternate between impressive and lackluster performances, and a defeat to Arsenal on Sunday would significantly heighten the prospect of a second consecutive trophyless campaign.
Guardiola is yet to announce a definitive decision regarding his future as he has one year remaining on his current deal. He intends to take time away after the Wembley fixture to evaluate “what is best for him” and “what is best for the club.”
City are reportedly exploring potential replacements. Enzo Maresca, who was dismissed by Chelsea in January, is among those considered for the role. The Italian had previously confirmed discussions with City before his departure from Stamford Bridge, although his time with Chelsea ended with the club opting for Liam Rosenior as his successor.
Other candidates include Xabi Alonso, who was let go by Real Madrid this season, and Cesc Fabregas, currently managing Como. This is not the first time City have contemplated successors for Guardiola; similar uncertainty loomed in 2021, but he ultimately remained and later led the team to their first Champions League title in 2023.
In light of the defeat to Real Madrid, Guardiola urged his team to improve their clinical edge in front of goal, acknowledging that missed opportunities played a crucial role in their elimination from the tournament. “Still, we aren’t complete… we have a final on Sunday, the FA Cup against Liverpool and the Premier League is still tight,” he noted.
As they approach their match against Arsenal, City find themselves entering as underdogs. Mikel Arteta’s Gunners are currently in excellent form, recently achieving a 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, keeping their European aspirations alive.
Guardiola’s next steps could very much define the direction of Manchester City. As football continues to intertwine with critical decisions, the anticipation surrounding this weekend’s fixture serves as a vivid reminder of the club’s precarious standing, not just on the pitch, but in the broader landscape of football management.
