Pep Guardiola criticises Sky Sports over distorted reporting

Pep Guardiola launched a pointed attack on Sky Sports during his latest press conference, accusing the Premier League’s primary broadcast partner of distorting his statements, reports BritPanorama.

The Manchester City manager, displaying evident sarcasm, responded sharply when a Sky journalist asked about transfer matters. “You are from Sky, right? OK, good,” Guardiola remarked. “I have to be careful what I say. After that, it is completely the opposite (of) what you write and put on the screen.”

His frustration with the broadcaster has intensified in recent weeks, particularly following comments made during a live broadcast that added weight to his public criticism. Tensions have been building throughout Guardiola’s decade-long tenure at the Etihad, but the dispute has escalated markedly as of late.

Earlier in December, Sky reporters were barred from posing questions at a City media briefing, a decision believed to have stemmed from Guardiola watching coverage on their 24-hour news channel. When questioned about City’s pursuit of Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, Guardiola was notably guarded. “That is why I said yesterday before and the day of the game – the transfer window is completely closed right now,” he stated, deflecting speculation while maintaining his combative stance towards the broadcaster.

City are reportedly finalising a £65 million transfer for Semenyo in the coming days, despite Guardiola’s reluctance to comment publicly. The club’s January transfer activity extends beyond Semenyo, with Oscar Bobb currently in discussions with Borussia Dortmund. These negotiations indicate City’s strategy to reshape their attacking options this winter, even as their manager publicly downplays such pursuits.

Guardiola’s side will travel to the Stadium of Light on New Year’s Day to face Sunderland, a team that has remained unbeaten at home since returning to the Championship. Sunderland have already claimed notable scalps this season, defeating Newcastle and holding both Arsenal and Aston Villa to draws on their own turf. “Sunderland are so tough. I remember in my first season when I went there the crowd was unbelievable,” Guardiola reflected. “It will be really difficult but at the same time we are ready.”

With the pressure mounting and the January transfer window looming, the consequences of Guardiola’s tensions with the media could ripple through City’s preparations as they strive to maintain their standing in the league.

In sport, as in life, the narrative often shifts quickly — one moment, a manager is fielding questions about new signings, the next, they’re defending their words against perceived misrepresentation. It’s a delicate balance, much like the one Guardiola will need to strike on the pitch against a challenging Sunderland side waiting to pounce.
