PDC chief confirms potential changes to Premier League darts format following player feedback

Changes to Premier League Darts format expected, says PDC chief

The Premier League Darts format is set for future adjustments, although no immediate changes are anticipated, reports BritPanorama. PDC chief executive Matt Porter confirmed that while changes are forthcoming, the current setup remains effective as demonstrated by audience engagement and ticket sales.

“We will change it at some point, but at the moment, you can only look at the numbers that are in front of you,” Porter said, emphasizing the positive metrics that indicate the format’s success. The live audience and television viewership figures reveal a consistent upward trend.

Porter pointed out that every metric is improving, from ticket sales to viewing figures. “If people stop buying tickets or start changing the channel, then it wouldn’t be working, but every metric is improving,” he added, suggesting that audience satisfaction remains high.

While acknowledging that repetition in player matchups has been a concern for fans, Porter argued that this is a matter of perspective. “You’re looking at it through the eyes of somebody who’s perhaps watching it on TV every week,” he explained, drawing a comparison to tennis, where audiences readily enjoy repeated matches featuring star players.

Michael van Gerwen, who won the first Premier League night this season, has previously criticized the format, voicing his concerns just hours before the tournament began in Newcastle. Meanwhile, debates regarding player selection persist, with Porter citing Danny Noppert as the most unfortunate omission from this year’s lineup, despite his strong performance in prior tournaments.

Stephen Bunting’s inclusion sparked questions due to his previous season’s standings, but Porter defended the decision on the grounds of Bunting’s world number seven ranking and six tournament victories throughout the past year.

The 2026 Premier League Darts commenced last night in Newcastle, featuring eight competitors vying for a share of the £1.25 million prize pot. This year’s lineup includes Luke Littler, Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen, Gian van Veen, Jonny Clayton, Stephen Bunting, Josh Rock, and Gerwyn Price. Under the knockout format, players face each other through several weeks before culminating in Finals Night in London on May 28, where the overall champion will receive £350,000.

As the tournament progresses, questions linger over format efficacy versus audience engagement — a dynamic that continues to shape the competitive landscape of darts amid ongoing evolution.
