Human remains discovered near World Cup stadium in Mexico

More than 500 bags of human remains have been discovered next to a stadium set to host World Cup matches in just a few months’ time, reports BritPanorama.

Authorities have identified approximately 20 grave sites scattered across Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state, which is known for its violent cartel activity, particularly that of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Recent searches have focused on four of the 22 sites, where over 500 bags of human remains have already been retrieved. The findings come as the football tournament is set to commence in June, raising concerns about public safety in the area.

In Zapopan, another locality within Jalisco, authorities have found 270 bags containing human remains on a 54-acre property. These discoveries have coincided with a wave of violence attributed to rival cartels following the death of notorious CJNG leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes.

Local search teams, such as the Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco, have been actively involved in tracking down missing persons in the region. Jaime Aguilar, a member of the group, stated, “In Jalisco, the missing are made to vanish,” highlighting the pervasive issue of enforced disappearances connected to cartel activities.

The attention brought by the impending World Cup has intensified local scrutiny on these grim discoveries. “We have so many problems, and they want to invest in the World Cup? With all the violence, it’s not a good idea,” said Hugo Perez, a local restaurant owner.

Despite the unsettling backdrop, officials assure the public of their commitment to security. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declared there are “no risks” for fans and tourists attending the tournament. FIFA President Gianni Infantino echoed this sentiment, expressing “complete confidence in Mexico” to host the event successfully.

The stadium, Akron Stadium, is one of three venues in Mexico slated for use during the tournament, which will feature four key matches. However, with the specter of violence looming nearby, both locals and international observers remain apprehensive about the situation as the tournament approaches.

As the kickoff draws nearer, the intersection of sport and societal issues in Mexico becomes starkly apparent. In a country where football brings unity, it is a sobering reminder that shadows sometimes lurk behind the brighter moments.
