Oscar hospitalised after collapsing in training

Former Chelsea and Brazil icon Oscar has been rushed to hospital after “collapsing” during training in Sao Paulo, reports BritPanorama.

The midfield maestro is thought to have lost consciousness while working on an exercise bike, having started to feel unwell. Brazilian media reported that Oscar fell to the floor, where he was unconscious for two minutes.

An ambulance then transported the 34-year-old to Einstein Hospital Israelita in São Paulo, where medical staff conducted further tests. According to the club, doctors discovered he was suffering from cardiac issues.

Oscar is now in a stable condition and will remain under observation until the extent of his diagnosis is confirmed. He underwent an MRI and a diagnostic catheterisation following the incident.

Following the event, São Paulo FC released a statement detailing the care Oscar received. “During tests carried out on Tuesday morning, at SuperCT, as part of the preparation for the 2026 pre-season, the athlete Oscar presented an incident with cardiological changes, being promptly attended to by the club’s professionals and the medical team from Einstein Hospital Israelita, which was present at the site,” the statement read. The club added that Oscar’s condition was stable and he remains under observation for further tests.

Oscar had recently made a return to the Brazilian side in 2024, signing a three-year contract. In a statement upon his return, he expressed his happiness to be back, stating, “I’m happy to be back in Brazil and to be able to play for Sao Paulo, which is the club where I started out.”

He previously enjoyed a successful career at Chelsea, making 203 appearances and scoring 38 goals. Oscar’s time in the Premier League saw him win major titles, including the UEFA Europa League and two Premier League titles.

As reports suggest he may consider retiring from football to focus on recovery, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the physical toll professional athletes endure, and the importance of prioritising health over the rigours of the game.
