Oliver Glasner to leave Crystal Palace at season’s end
Oliver Glasner has announced his decision to leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season, following the expiration of his contract in the summer, reports BritPanorama.
Currently in 13th place in the Premier League, Glasner’s side has recently faced setbacks, including a surprising exit from the FA Cup third round at the hands of non-league Macclesfield last weekend.
Looking ahead, Palace will face an in-form Sunderland on Saturday, a crucial match for the team as they strive to improve their league standing.
Glasner cited his desire for “a new challenge” as the primary reason for his departure, stating, “I haven’t spoken to any other club – no interest – and I told the players, I promised them today that I will give my best to play the best ever season in Crystal Palace history and to break the (Premier League) points record of last season.” He asserted that the team is currently four points ahead of last season at this stage and aims to secure another trophy for the club.
Regarding his future successor, Glasner expressed optimism, stating that the club is in “great hands” and noted efforts behind the scenes to bring back positivity. He had previously informed club chairman Steve Parish of his decision months ago, maintaining confidentiality until now.
Discussing their conversation, Glasner recalled, “We had a long talk. I told him I will not sign a new contract for Crystal Palace.” He emphasised the importance of clarity for the players and fans, stating, “This is what the players deserve, this is what fans deserve.”
Having joined Palace nearly two years ago on February 19, 2024, Glasner led the South London club to its first major trophy last season—a historic FA Cup victory. A solitary goal from Eberechi Eze secured their win at Wembley Stadium, marking a significant achievement in the club’s long history.
Following recent struggles, including their FA Cup upset, speculation has arisen about Glasner’s candidacy for the vacant managerial position at Manchester United. The club currently has Michael Carrick in an interim role while seeking a permanent replacement for the upcoming season.
Glasner leaves Palace with an impressive record, having won 41 of 95 matches (43.16 per cent) and achieved their highest finishing position in the Premier League last season. His exit coincides with reports that Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is set to leave the club for Manchester City before the January transfer window closes, highlighting ongoing changes at Selhurst Park as the club looks to navigate these transitions.
In the world of football, change is a constant, and Glasner’s departure serves as yet another reminder of the delicate balance between ambition and uncertainty in the game. With every end, something new awaits, often reshaping the landscape in unexpected ways.
