Oli McBurnie criticises referee after Hull City’s defeat
Hull City forward Oli McBurnie launched a scathing attack on referee John Brooks following his side’s 2-1 loss to Sheffield United on Saturday, declaring that the official “doesn’t really understand football,” reports BritPanorama.
McBurnie’s fierce post-match comments stemmed from what he and his teammates perceived as a series of divisive officiating decisions throughout the Championship encounter. Brooks found himself at the centre of Hull’s frustrations, particularly after key moments altered the match’s trajectory, making him the focal point of the club’s discontent.
The pivotal moment occurred in the 75th minute when Brooks dismissed John Lundstram for a second bookable offence, reducing Hull to 10 men while they held a 1-0 advantage. McBurnie argued that the referee obstructed Lundstram, leading to the foul against Jairo Riedewald. “The referee’s clearly in Lunny’s way; he’s had to run around him, and that’s why he’s off-balance as he’s making a tackle,” McBurnie explained.
The striker elaborated, stating, “You give the foul but you don’t give the yellow card, because if you’re not in the way there, Lunny can run in and take the ball and there’s no foul whatsoever.” He acknowledged he was unaware of Lundstram’s prior caution for an earlier incident. Shortly after, Brooks awarded a penalty when Kyle Joseph was deemed to have fouled Riedewald during a goalmouth scramble.
McBurnie also raised questions about Brooks’s decision-making. He expressed confusion regarding the awarding of the penalty, noting he asked the referee who committed the foul, and Brooks replied he did not know. “How can you give a foul if you’re not sure who it’s on?” he remarked. The forward observed that similar physical interactions had gone unpunished throughout Hull’s season, making the referee’s actions even more perplexing.
Gus Hamer converted the resulting spot-kick to equalise for Sheffield United in the 85th minute. Hull’s misery was compounded just three minutes later when substitute Danny Ings scored to secure three points for the Blades. Despite the defeat, Hull City remains in sixth position in the Championship, with 68 points—a four-point advantage over Wrexham in the play-off race. Sheffield United’s victory helped elevate them to 16th place.
In a competition where the margins are razor-thin, the decisions of officials can shape outcomes, leaving clubs like Hull City grappling with the consequences not just of their performance, but of outside influences that prove just as pivotal.
