14-year-old Nottingham Forest academy goalkeeper dies

A former Nottingham Forest academy goalkeeper has died aged 14, with the Premier League side paying tribute to the youth prospect, reports BritPanorama.

Josh Travis died on Wednesday in Nottinghamshire after police were called to a railway line following reports of a person being hit by a train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Forest expressed their condolences, stating they were “deeply saddened” by the youngster’s passing. The club’s statement read: “Everyone at Nottingham Forest is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our former academy goalkeeper Josh Travis. Our thoughts are with Josh’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

Forest captain Ryan Yates shared an emotional tribute on social media, posting a heartbroken emoji. Meanwhile, Josh’s family described him as “a lad with an incredible energy for life, an infectious and mischievous smile, kind sparkling eyes, and so much love to give.” They added: “He leaves a gap in our lives that is and will always be impossible to fill, and we will miss him forever.”

Aspire Football Coaching expressed their devastation regarding Travis’s passing, highlighting his talent as a goalkeeper and his positive presence within the team. The organization has postponed all games this weekend in a gesture of respect for the 14-year-old.

Network Rail has requested an emergency closure of the Chestnut Grove footpath level crossing, where floral tributes have begun to accumulate. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has stated it is conducting a preliminary examination into the incident.

A spokesman for the RAIB confirmed that their inspectors continue to gather evidence, with further action to be determined after the review. A spokesperson for British Transport Police stated that the boy’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Mark Budden, Network Rail’s route director for the East Midlands, expressed condolences on behalf of the organization, emphasizing the importance of safety and their commitment to supporting the RAIB’s ongoing investigations. The crossing on the Nottingham to Lincoln line will remain closed for an initial 21 days.

In the world of youth football, the loss of a promising talent reminds us just how fragile life can be, cutting short futures filled with potential and dreams. It’s a poignant moment for the community to come together, reflecting not only on the individual’s impact but the collective spirit of a game that connects us all, even in the most difficult times.
