Nottingham Forest advance to Europa League quarter-finals

Nottingham Forest secured a place in the Europa League quarter-finals following a penalty shootout victory over Midtjylland in Denmark, reports BritPanorama.

After losing the first leg 1-0 at home, the English club bounced back with a 2-1 win in normal time, bringing the aggregate score to 1-1. They went on to triumph 3-0 in the penalty shootout.

Forest managed a stunning turnaround despite having lost both previous encounters against the Danish side. The win sees them now poised to meet either Stuttgart or Porto in the quarter-final stage next month.

Nicolas Dominguez opened the scoring for Forest shortly before half-time with a looping header. The hosts looked to gain momentum when captain Ryan Yates scored a powerful goal seven minutes into the second half, putting Forest ahead on aggregate. However, Midtjylland equalised through Martin Erlic in the 69th minute, sending the match into extra time after a tense battle.

Late in the additional period, Yates had what seemed a late winner disallowed for offside following a VAR review. The penalty shootout proved disastrous for Midtjylland as all three of their attempts failed; Cho Gue-sung hit the woodwork, while Aral Simsir also struck the post. Edward Chilufya’s miss capped a dismal night, as he slipped during his run-up.

In stark contrast, Forest displayed composure under pressure, with Morgan Gibbs-White, Ibrahim Sangare, and Neco Williams converting their penalties to secure a comprehensive 3-0 victory in the shootout.

Manager Vitor Pereira’s selection, which saw nine changes from their goalless draw against Fulham last weekend, indicated a strategic focus on their upcoming Premier League relegation battle against Tottenham. Nonetheless, the alterations did not disrupt their performance, with Forest dominating the opening half and culminating in a historic advancement in European competition.

While Forest continue their journey in Europe, their Premier League struggles loom large, presenting questions about the balance they will need to maintain in the dual pursuits ahead. There is an undeniable thrill to their European adventure during a challenging domestic campaign—a reminder of how sport can swing between triumph and adversity.
