Northampton School for Boys claims Under-18s Schools Cup
British state school Northampton School for Boys claimed the Under-18s Schools Cup title at Twickenham today, overcoming Epsom College in the final, reports BritPanorama.
The Northampton side’s honours in the 2025/26 campaign represent a historic breakthrough that challenges the traditional hierarchy of English schoolboy rugby. They secured the title after a dominant second half, indicating their overall control in the match.
Jack Lewis, the back-row captain, brought down the curtain on his school career in style during this decisive victory. His leadership was complemented by crucial contributions from players like inside centre Malachy Renihan, who produced a vital turnover penalty in the semi-final against Campion.
This triumph reflects a robust pipeline of elite talent emerging from the school’s rugby programme, with 19 players currently in the Northampton Saints U18 academy. Additionally, seven squad members have earned U18 international selection, showcasing the programme’s depth.
NSB’s double triumph carries particular weight given the historical dominance of private schools in these competitions. The achievement signals that state sector rugby can compete at the highest level when supported appropriately. Before NSB, St Peter’s High School in Gloucester was the last state school to win the cup back in 2006.
This remarkable achievement marks a watershed moment for state education in schools’ rugby, a domain long controlled by independent institutions. Previously, no state school had achieved what NSB did this season, particularly after they also secured the SOCS Daily Mail Schools Trophy earlier, becoming the first state school to lift that title.
As state schools continue to challenge the established order, the notion that rugby is solely the domain of the elite may need reevaluation. How this affects the future landscape of schoolboy rugby will be a story worth watching.
