Springer apologises for crowd disruption during darts match

German darts player Niko Springer has apologised and admitted feeling “ashamed” following crowd disruption during his European Darts Trophy second-round victory over Stephen Bunting in Göttingen, reports BritPanorama.

The world number 53 advanced to the third round with a narrow 6-5 victory, but the match was overshadowed by disruptive behaviour from some spectators who whistled and jeered, seemingly to distract Bunting.

The incident escalated during the deciding leg when referee Huw Ware intervened, requesting more respectful behaviour after already making a polite request earlier. “I’ve asked politely once and I’ll say it impolitely: shut up please. Trying to have a game of darts up here,” Ware stated.

Following the match, MC Philip Brzezinski addressed the unruly crowd, expressing that only a few people ruined the experience for the majority. He remarked, “There’s three to four people who, through their whistling, destroyed an amazing game; to those four people from four thousand we’ll say: you are not welcome here. We don’t want this.”

Bunting acknowledged the distressing experience despite noting that it resulted from only a small minority of the crowd. He expressed his hurt on social media, stating he does not typically complain about defeats but felt affected by the treatment he endured, highlighting the issue of crowd behaviour in darts.

Similar crowd disturbances occurred earlier in the week at a Premier League event in Nottingham, with players also facing jeering from spectators. Bunting alluded to the growing concern surrounding crowd conduct in German events, saying, “I understand why certain players don’t want to travel over here for the whistling.” He, however, emphasised his appreciation for the genuine fans in Germany.

The disruption at the European Darts Trophy raises questions about audience etiquette in professional darting events, as players balance their performance with the unpredictable dynamics of live spectators.

As the world of darts navigates the line between entertainment and sportsmanship, these incidents serve as a reminder of the sometimes volatile relationship between players and fans. It encourages a dialogue about what constitutes respectful support in a competitive yet entertaining atmosphere.
