Newcastle United dismiss transfer rumors surrounding Sandro Tonali
Newcastle United have strongly refuted claims that midfielder Sandro Tonali will be leaving the club on transfer deadline day amid reported interest from Arsenal, reports BritPanorama.
On Monday, speculation intensified regarding Arsenal’s intentions to acquire Tonali from their Premier League rivals. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg mentioned that while Arsenal were “exploring” a deal, he acknowledged that it was “very difficult at this stage.”
Newcastle’s response has been unequivocal. According to the Telegraph, the club labelled the rumors as “stupid” and “complete rubbish,” asserting that Tonali is unlikely to depart St James’ Park on the final day of the transfer window.
With significant deals becoming increasingly rare on winter deadline days, Tonali’s importance to Newcastle suggests he will remain with the team through to the summer. The 25-year-old has been an integral part of Newcastle since joining from AC Milan in the summer of 2023.
Following a challenging start in England, where he faced a 10-month ban for breaching Italian betting regulations, Tonali has re-established himself as a key player, contributing to the club’s success in recent matches.
His role in helping Newcastle win the Carabao Cup last season, playing the full game in the final against Liverpool, has solidified his standing among fans. This season, he has made 34 appearances in all competitions, although he is still seeking his first goal.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe indicated last week that the club’s financial strategy would limit significant spending before the transfer window closed. “I don’t think it is a case that there is a pot of money stood there somewhere,” he explained, highlighting the fluctuation of financial circumstances based on performance and income.
As the club prepares for their upcoming semi-final match against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, the focus remains on Tonali’s contributions to Newcastle’s ambitions rather than potential exits. In a season marked by uncertainty and pressure, Tonali’s ability to navigate the turbulence continues to be a significant asset for the Magpies.
