Neil Warnock has emerged from retirement at the age of 77 to assume temporary control of National League South outfit Torquay United, reports BritPanorama.
The veteran boss, who stepped away from football management in April 2024 following a caretaker stint at Aberdeen, will return to the dugout for the first time in nearly two years. His appointment comes after the Gulls dismissed Paul Wotton on Sunday, with the 48-year-old’s tenure ending following a humiliating 5-0 thrashing at home to Chelmsford City.
The heavy defeat marked Torquay’s third consecutive loss and extended their winless streak to five matches, causing them to tumble from top spot to fourth place. The club released a statement expressing gratitude for Wotton’s efforts during his time at Plainmoor. The statement read: “We are very grateful to Paul for his hard work, professionalism, and commitment during his time at the club. We thank Paul for his contribution, both on and off the pitch. Torquay United wish Paul every success in his future endeavours.”
Warnock’s return to the touchline is not entirely unexpected given his existing involvement with the Devon club. The experienced manager joined Torquay’s board as an advisor in May 2024 after being approached by the Bryn Consortium, who acquired the club following its administration two years ago. This marks a reunion of sorts for Warnock, who previously had a brief spell in charge of the Gulls back in 1993.
His advisory role has kept him closely connected to the club’s operations, making him a natural choice to provide immediate stability during this turbulent period. The announcement confirmed that Warnock will take charge for Tuesday evening’s home fixture against Farnborough, with further details regarding interim arrangements to follow.
The former Plymouth Argyle captain had guided Torquay agonisingly close to the National League title last season, only to be pipped on goal difference on the final day. Warnock’s career statistics place him among the most prolific managers in English football history, holding the record for the most games managed in English football with 1,960. His eight promotions remain unmatched, with memorable campaigns at Sheffield United, where he led his boyhood club to the Premier League in 2006 alongside FA Cup and League Cup semi-final appearances.
This appointment represents his 21st managerial position across a remarkable 46-year career that began at Gainsborough in 1980.
