Over 20 MPs call for Fifa to remove the USA from the World Cup
More than 20 UK parliamentarians have urged Fifa to exclude the United States from participating in its own World Cup, following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro by American forces earlier this month, reports BritPanorama.
A coalition of 23 MPs from the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party, and Plaid Cymru has signed a motion advocating for international sporting bodies to take action. They are also calling on major competitions such as the Olympics to respond in kind.
The parliamentary motion demands that the United States demonstrate “clear compliance with international law and respect for the sovereignty of other nations” before being allowed to participate in international events.
The signatories contend that significant sporting occasions “should not be used to legitimise or normalise violations of international law by powerful states.” They expressed alarm over what they termed the “kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro,” interpreting it as a direct interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs.
The MPs have raised concerns about what they describe as “repeated veiled and overt threats made by senior US officials,” particularly regarding Denmark, Colombia, and Cuba, arguing that such actions “undermine the rules-based international order.”
Support for the motion draws upon Fifa’s ban on Russia, which remains excluded from international football after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Labour MP Brian Leishman stated, “Let’s have consistency. It’s an invasion of a sovereign nation and the kidnap of a president in Venezuela. I’m very critical of Maduro, I want to be very clear on that, but what we’ve seen is a breach of international law. When you see how Russia has been treated, which is absolutely correct, I just want there to be consistency.”
Despite the MPs’ demands, observers remain sceptical that Fifa will take any action against the US, especially given the favourable relationship that Fifa President Gianni Infantino has cultivated with former President Trump. This association has led to accusations of political compromise within the organisation, although Fifa maintains its obligation to remain neutral.
In December, Fifa awarded Trump its inaugural peace prize for his role in fostering a ceasefire and promoting peace between Israel and Palestine. The White House has previously defended the operation against Maduro, classifying it as a law enforcement action targeted at what they describe as an illegitimate leader accused of drug trafficking and terrorism.
The situation surrounding the World Cup now intertwines with complex international affairs, highlighting how even the most prestigious sporting events can become embroiled in geopolitical controversy. As the summer tournament approaches, the ramifications of these demands and the positioning of international bodies will come into sharper focus, revealing the delicate balance between sport and politics.
