Mikel Arteta praises Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final victory over Chelsea

Mikel Arteta has described Arsenal’s 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final triumph over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium as “magical”, as the Gunners completed a 4-2 aggregate victory, reports BritPanorama.

The decisive moment, which guaranteed Arsenal’s progression to the final at Wembley, arose deep into added time when Kai Havertz scored during the seventh minute of stoppage time, breaking away to seal the result.

Throughout the contest, the Gunners faced considerable late pressure from their London rivals before the former Chelsea forward delivered the knockout blow. The match itself produced relatively few clear-cut opportunities, showcasing Arsenal’s resilience.

Arteta remarked, “It’s the best vitamins we can put in our bodies,” highlighting the team’s effort. “The fact that we worked so hard to achieve this moment and to have this moment together, it’s just magical. You can see the joy, the smiles, the energy in the dressing room.”

He noted the crowd’s vibrant atmosphere contributed significantly, contrasting with the tension experienced during earlier games this year. “The energy was very good. From the beginning I sensed that it was different,” Arteta stated.

Saturday’s 4-0 win away at Leeds, which concluded a three-match winless streak in the Premier League, restored confidence within the squad that had been pivotal during the first half of the season. Despite lingering questions regarding Arteta’s leadership, the Gunners’ current position at the top of the Premier League feeds hope for sustaining their momentum.

Arteta commented on the developmental lessons taken from past experiences, expressing satisfaction with his team’s competitive edge. “Today was a very different game from the (first leg) at Stamford Bridge. We dealt with it really well,” he reflected.

For Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior, the defeat halted a five-match winning streak. He acknowledged external challenges faced, noting, “In the first leg, I’m not making excuses, but we had an illness go through the camp on the day of the game – we had four players missing – and I’d been in charge for three days. I cannot fault the application, intensity or the fight of the players.”

The victory marks Arsenal’s first appearance in a Wembley final since Arteta’s inaugural campaign as manager, during which the club won the FA Cup in 2020 amidst pandemic restrictions. The Gunners will now face either Manchester City or Newcastle in the final, scheduled for March 22.

As Arsenal prepares for its return to Wembley, questions abound: can they recapture the glory of past triumphs and transform hard-fought progress into a trophy? Expect an electric atmosphere and the weight of history on the players’ shoulders as they step onto that hallowed turf once more.
