Mikel Arteta praises David Raya after crucial Champions League win

Mikel Arteta described goalkeeper David Raya as “extraordinary” following his match-saving display as Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 Champions League triumph against Sporting Lisbon, reports BritPanorama.

The late victory, achieved courtesy of substitute Kai Havertz in stoppage time, puts the Gunners in a strong position ahead of next week’s quarter-final second leg at the Emirates. Raya played a pivotal role, denying Maxi Araujo and making an impressive double save late in the game.

Arteta acknowledged his squad had “a point to prove” after consecutive losses. “It was a big night, a big moment in the season. Especially where we were coming from,” he stated, articulating a need for reinvigoration within the team.

Speaking further about his goalkeeper, Arteta said: “He’s extraordinary, magnificent, and incredible. I don’t know the adjective, the right one. And with that, it’s enough. We are so happy to have him.” The dramatic triumph not only enhances Arsenal’s standing in Europe but also serves as a morale boost ahead of their domestic fixtures.

The Gunners return to Premier League action on Saturday against Bournemouth, seeking to establish a commanding 12-point advantage over Manchester City. Arteta noted that the team’s identity was on display, and expressed confidence that a turnaround was forthcoming, stating, “You’re going to learn the environment and the people that you have around you.” He remarked, “I cannot be prouder to work in a club with people that only ask: ‘What else can I do to help?’”

Havertz supported his manager’s accolades for Raya, asserting that the goalkeeper has been “underestimated” globally. He added that for the last two seasons, Raya has “been the best keeper in the world.”

Sporting head coach Rui Borges reacted to the narrow defeat by affirming that his side remains in the tie despite the goal disadvantage. He expressed frustration at the result, stating, “We did not deserve to lose after all we did in the game. But that is football.” Borges looked ahead to the return leg, confident of a strong response from his team.

As Arsenal gears up to face Bournemouth, anticipation builds around their ability to harness this momentum, blending their newfound resolve with the strategic edge they displayed in Lisbon. The blend of hope and determination may well serve them well in the weeks ahead.
