Mikel Arteta responds to Paul Scholes’ criticism of Arsenal

Mikel Arteta laughed off Paul Scholes’ assertion that Arsenal would be the dullest Premier League champions ever, maintaining that he has received very different feedback from sources across Europe, reports BritPanorama.

Arteta countered Scholes’ claims, stating, “I hear completely the opposite: all around Europe that we are the most exciting team in Europe – the most goals, the most clean sheets. Maybe I have different sources.” When pressed on the disparity between opinions in England and abroad, he playfully challenged the critics to share their identities so he could engage with them directly.

Scholes’ criticism focused on Arsenal’s reliance on set pieces, observing that the team’s front four has struggled to convert chances regularly. In particular, he highlighted Viktor Gyokeres as the club’s leading league scorer with only six goals, suggesting this reflects a deeper issue in their attacking play.

While Scholes presents a valid point regarding set pieces—Arsenal has scored 17 goals from such situations, the highest in the division—Arteta expressed little concern about the manner in which his team is scoring. Arsenal has notably excelled, becoming the first team to win all eight matches in the Champions League group stage.

Looking ahead, Arsenal prepares for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at home to Chelsea, leading the tie 3-2 from the first match. Arteta is keen to guide his team to Wembley, emphasizing the significance of lifting silverware, a feat not achieved since 1993.

He noted that success would be particularly meaningful for many players who have yet to win major trophies, and with Arsenal unbeaten in their last nine encounters against Chelsea, the stage is set for a potentially decisive showdown. Meanwhile, Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior hinted that his team might attempt to exploit the anxiety within the home side following Arsenal’s recent league defeat to Manchester United.

As the anticipation builds, Arteta’s focus remains clear: “The big one is to get the team and players and all of our supporters together to enjoy that moment. That is what really drives me.” In football, as in life, perceptions can shift rapidly; the narrative of a so-called ‘boring champion’ could well transform with a decisive display. The stakes couldn’t be higher as the race for silverware intensifies.
