Michail Antonio witnesses explosions ahead of Qatari debut
Michail Antonio described the moment he witnessed explosions from his hotel window on what was meant to be his debut for Qatari club Al Sailiya, reports BritPanorama.
The former West Ham striker joined the club just two days after hostilities erupted in the region, confronting the harsh realities of the conflict directly. His debut match coincided with Iran’s retaliatory strikes against American and Israeli targets, with Qatari officials confirming that some attacks impacted civilian infrastructure.
Despite the shocking scenes on that fateful day, Antonio noted that he generally feels secure in Doha. In an interview, he shared, “Since I’ve been here, you do hear loud bangs and stuff, but you never really get to see anything. I’ve not had the experience of anything crazy going on here, so that’s the reason I do feel quite safe here… it reassures me that I’m OK here and I’m safe here.”
The 35-year-old forward’s path to Qatar followed a protracted search for a new club after his departure from West Ham last summer. Proposed transfers to Championship sides, including Leicester City and Charlton Athletic, fell through due to concerns about his fitness after a serious car accident in December 2024.
Antonio reflected on the challenges he faced during his search, stating, “I had to swallow my ego,” as he trained with multiple clubs to demonstrate his condition. Ultimately, fellow Jamaican international Mason Holgate persuaded him to join Al Sailiya on a short-term deal expiring at the season’s end.
Feeling discontent with how his tenure at West Ham ended, Antonio attributed part of the decision to part ways to former manager Graham Potter, who he believes aimed to dismantle the established core of the team at that time.
Now, after a significant period of recovery, Antonio made his debut, though it culminated in a 4-0 defeat to Al Duhail. Regardless, returning to competitive action marks an essential step in his journey back to professional football.
