Michael Vaughan recounts terrifying experience during Bondi Beach terror attack

Terror attack at Bondi Beach leaves 12 dead

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan was present during the tragic terror attack at Bondi Beach on Sunday afternoon, finding himself locked inside a restaurant while violence ensued outside, reports BritPanorama.

Vaughan, in Australia for his Ashes coverage duties, took to social media platform X to recount his experience and confirm his safety amid the chaos. “Being locked in a restaurant in Bondi was scary… Now home safe,” he wrote, expressing gratitude to emergency responders and to the individual who confronted one of the attackers.

The assault targeted Sydney’s Jewish community as they gathered to mark the beginning of Hanukkah at the popular beachside venue. Witnesses reported that two assailants emerged from a vehicle on Campbell Parade near Bondi Pavilion around 6.40pm local time, unleashing a barrage of gunfire with claims of over 30 shots fired along a bustling tourist strip. The death toll currently stands at 12, with 29 others injured, including two police officers in critical condition.

One of the attackers has been identified as Naveed Akram, 24, who was reportedly shot during the incident. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that police received reports of gunfire at Archer Park shortly after 6.47pm. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack, describing it as a “vile act of violence and hate,” and labeled it “an act of evil antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.”

The attack has drawn responses from leaders around the world, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling it “deeply distressing news” and extending condolences to those affected. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed horror at the incident, reaffirming international support for Australia’s Jewish community during what should have been a celebration.

In a statement amidst escalating tensions, Albanese vowed to “eradicate” hate from Australia, asserting, “An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian.”

As details continue to emerge, the tragedy at Bondi Beach serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of security and the urgent need for collective vigilance in safeguarding communities against extremist violence. The interplay of sport and global events resonates deeply, highlighting how moments meant for celebration can swiftly turn to scenes of despair.
