Michael Van Gerwen faces potential disciplinary action
Michael Van Gerwen is potentially facing disciplinary action from the Darts Regulation Authority after using an expletive during a live Sky Sports broadcast, reports BritPanorama.
The Dutch star, a three-time world champion, secured a 6-4 triumph over compatriot Gian van Veen on the opening night of the Premier League in Newcastle. However, his post-match interview took an unexpected turn when he swore on air while speaking with presenter Emma Paton and pundit Wayne Mardle. Paton subsequently issued an apology to viewers for the language used.
During his on-stage conversation following the Dutch derby, Van Gerwen expressed his relief at finally claiming silverware, stating: “It’s about f***ing time I win something.” The outburst came as the 35-year-old discussed his performance, noting he had prevailed despite not producing his best darts. “It’s definitely a good start, but without even playing my A-performance I still won it,” Van Gerwen told the Sky Sports team.
He also acknowledged there remains room for improvement while expressing satisfaction at the confidence boost his victory provided. “There is still a lot to work on and I know I can do better than this, but it just gives you confidence,” he remarked. Van Gerwen revealed personal difficulties had affected his recent form, particularly at the Masters tournament. “It’s always nice to respond well,” he admitted.
Van Gerwen’s triumph in Newcastle marked his first nightly Premier League victory since claiming the title in Birmingham on 11 April 2024. He candidly stated that, while the Premier League is significant, his main priority is ranking tournaments, emphasizing, “My main priority is not the Premier League; it is the ranking tournaments.” With a long season ahead, he highlighted the importance of confidence-building victories in sustaining performance levels.
As Van Gerwen navigates potential repercussions from his outburst, the balance between competitive passion and professional decorum remains a point of scrutiny — a reminder of how the pressure of the sport can lead to impassioned moments, often blurring the lines of conduct in the public eye.
