Michael Owen insists Liverpool can still challenge for Premier League title
Michael Owen believes that Liverpool can still contend for the Premier League title, despite their current position of 12th place and an 11-point deficit to leaders Arsenal, reports BritPanorama.
The former Liverpool striker acknowledged that while the chances are low, he insists the trophy is not out of reach.
Recent performances have contributed to Liverpool’s struggles, including a dismal run in which they dropped points in six of their last seven league fixtures. Their latest setback was a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, deepening a disappointing season under manager Arne Slot.
Despite Liverpool’s summertime investment of around £450 million, consistent results have been elusive. Yet, Owen highlighted moments from specific matches as evidence of the team’s potential quality. “I mean, that performance against Real Madrid, I know it was only 1-0, but it could have been 4-0. I mean, they were absolutely brilliant,” he stated on the Mennie Talks Podcast.
Owen noted that the squad has demonstrated glimpses of excellence, particularly in a half against Aston Villa and their victory over Arsenal at Anfield. He argued these performances suggest that, despite challenges, Liverpool is capable of producing exceptional football that could ignite an improbable title challenge.
However, inconsistency remains Liverpool’s greatest obstacle. Owen admitted, “I’m not dressing it up, they’re not consistent. They’re not at their best, but it’s not like they’re playing badly.” He pointed out that the team tends to show championship-winning football sporadically, rather than across entire matches.
In further reflections, Owen specifically criticized Liverpool’s Champions League loss to Galatasaray, calling it an especially “poor performance” that illustrated their unpredictability this season. Despite his cautious optimism regarding Liverpool’s potential, Owen ultimately believes Arsenal is the most likely candidate to secure the championship this year due to their consistent form.
“I think they’re quite a consistent team,” he concluded, noting Arsenal’s strong recent record and their progression as a title contender following multiple near-misses in previous seasons.
As Liverpool navigates this challenging campaign, Owen’s observations serve as a reminder of the fine margins in football—where occasional brilliance can flicker, but consistency dictates success.
