Carrick criticises officiating after Manchester United’s draw with Bournemouth

Michael Carrick launched a scathing attack on the officiating following Manchester United’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth on Friday evening, branding the inconsistent penalty decisions as “crazy” and “baffling,” reports BritPanorama.

The United manager was incensed when his side was denied a penalty after Amad Diallo appeared to be hauled down by Adrien Truffert inside the area. In stark contrast, Bournemouth was awarded a spot-kick for a similar incident involving Harry Maguire and Evanilson, with the United defender also receiving a red card.

“To give one and not give the other, I just can’t get my head around it. It’s crazy,” Carrick remarked. Bruno Fernandes had opened the scoring for United by converting a penalty kick in the 60th minute after Matheus Cunha was brought down.

The Red Devils seemed poised to extend their lead when Diallo was fouled, yet referee Stuart Attwell waved away their appeals, and VAR chose not to intervene. Almost immediately, Bournemouth equalised through Ryan Christie, who scored following a swift counter-attack.

United briefly regained the lead when James Hill accidentally turned the ball into his own net while under pressure from Maguire at a corner. However, United’s troubles deepened as Maguire was sent off for his foul on Evanilson, leading to a penalty converted by substitute Junior Kroupi.

Carrick voiced his skepticism regarding the effectiveness of VAR in ensuring fair outcomes in matches, noting, “That’s what VAR was for. Clean it up and consistency. Surely if one’s been given, the same decision should follow.”

Fernandes echoed his manager’s frustration, questioning the absence of VAR intervention. He stated, “I think we could have gone 2-0 up, and then we ended up conceding a goal, not getting a penalty, and then we get a penalty against which is more or less the same situation as Amad.”

Despite the frustration, United remains third in the standings, now seven points clear of Chelsea in sixth place and well-positioned for Champions League qualification. They will next face Leeds United following the international break.

Ultimately, while the penalties may raise eyebrows, they mirror the unpredictable and often contentious nature of the Premier League, where decisions can hang in the balance, altering the course of a match. It’s a stark reminder of how the fine line of officiating continues to shape the beautiful game.
