Mauricio Pochettino remains open to Tottenham return after World Cup commitments

Speculation surrounds Mauricio Pochettino’s return to Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino has declined to dismiss the possibility of returning to Tottenham Hotspur, declaring himself “open to everything” once his World Cup commitments conclude this summer, reports BritPanorama.

The Argentine, currently at the helm of the United States men’s national team, addressed persistent speculation during an interview with Spanish radio programme Radiogaceta de los Deportes earlier this week. “There are always rumours, I’m always linked (to clubs). To Tottenham, just like at one time I was linked to Espanyol, or to other clubs,” Pochettino stated.

He acknowledged that supporters often turn to nostalgia during difficult periods, noting that “people tend to fall back on emotions” when results falter. His remarks come at a particularly turbulent moment for his former employers, who find themselves embroiled in a genuine battle against relegation.

Spurs currently occupy a precarious position in the Premier League table, sitting merely four points clear of the drop zone ahead of Sunday’s fixture at Craven Cottage against Fulham. Igor Tudor, the former Juventus manager, has assumed caretaker duties following the dismissal of Thomas Frank earlier this month. Tudor’s tenure began in dismal fashion, with Tottenham suffering a humiliating 4-1 defeat to north London rivals Arsenal last weekend.

Pochettino’s enduring popularity amongst the Tottenham faithful stems from a remarkable tenure that spanned from 2014 to 2019, during which he transformed the club into genuine contenders. The pinnacle arrived in 2018-19, when he guided Spurs to their first Champions League final, while the previous campaign had yielded a second-place finish in the top flight.

“With Mauricio we played good football,” he acknowledged, recognising the emotional connection that persists nearly seven years after his departure. Remarkably, even a season managing bitter rivals Chelsea during the 2023-24 campaign failed to diminish the goodwill he commands in north London. Pochettino’s contract with the United States expires following the conclusion of the World Cup, leaving his future decidedly uncertain.

However, any appointment would face practical complications, with Pochettino potentially occupied until late June or beyond should the Americans progress deep into the tournament. Reports from the British press indicate that no formal or informal discussions have taken place between the manager and Tottenham regarding a potential summer reunion.

For Pochettino, the allure of a return to a club where he enjoyed significant success continues to resonate. Yet, for Spurs, the immediate challenge is survival, and that reality might complicate nostalgic dreams of reconciliation.
