Matthew Hoggard urges England to believe in Ashes victory
Cricket legend Matthew Hoggard asserts that England must have confidence as they approach the Ashes series, stating, “The time for talking is over,” reports BritPanorama.
In a recent interview, Hoggard, who played a key role in England’s 2005 Ashes triumph, highlighted that Australia’s current injury issues could potentially provide an advantage for England in the upcoming test series.
Describing the unique challenges of competing in an Ashes contest, he noted, “There’s nothing quite like it. When you’re over in Australia, it’s different from any other series. The whole country feels against you, and every ball is a battle.”
Referring to the intense atmosphere in Australia, Hoggard remarked, “Walking into a café or a pub, you feel that pressure. It’s intense, but that’s what makes it so special. It’s not just about the game; it’s about pride, about representing your country in the biggest contest of all.”
Reflecting on the competitive environment, he elaborated, “They give you a lot of stick, and you’re always aware of the crowd, the noise. But that’s what pushes you. It makes you want to perform even more. When you finally get a wicket or score runs, it’s a feeling like no other. It’s why we play the game.”
Looking ahead to the series, Hoggard expressed optimism about England’s prospects: “We’ve got a good team this time. We haven’t won in Australia since 2011, but we’ve got the firepower.”
He noted the condition of the pitch in Perth, suggesting it may favour England’s bowling attack: “The Perth pitch looks like it’ll be a fast, green surface. That suits us – our bowlers are ready, and our batsmen are prepared to go hard. It’s going to be tough, no doubt, but I believe we can do it.”
Hoggard stressed the necessity of maintaining pressure on Australia, stating, “It’s about taking one more wicket, making one more score. The one thing about this squad is that we’re not here just to make up the numbers. We want to win. We’ve got the talent, and we’ve got the motivation. So we’ll see what happens. I think we have a real shot this time.”
Addressing the evolving dynamics of England’s game under the ‘Bazball’ philosophy, he described it as “a real burst of energy into England cricket. It’s about playing fearless, attacking cricket. That’s what people want to see, entertainment and performance.”
However, he cautioned that playing in Australia required additional mental resilience: “When you’re over in Australia, though, it’s about that extra bit of mental toughness, staying calm against the crowd and the hostile environment. That’s where the real test lies.”
On the topic of mental fortitude in the Ashes, Hoggard acknowledged the added scrutiny players now face: “There’s a lot of sledging and mind games, but these days, the microphones in the stumps mean players have to be even more careful. You need thick skin, but also control. That’s what makes the Ashes special. It’s intense, it’s passionate, and it’s the best showdown in cricket.”
Hoggard concluded the conversation with resolve, stating, “The talk’s over. Now it’s time for cricket. I’m excited to see how it all unfolds. We’ve got a solid chance. It’s going to be a cracking series. Can’t wait to see it all start.”
