Matthew Hatton Speaks About Brother Ricky’s Untimely Death

Ricky Hatton’s brother has opened up for the first time since the boxer tragically lost his life, reports BritPanorama.

Hatton was discovered deceased in his Greater Manchester home on September 14 by his manager, Paul Speak. This news has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans worldwide.

Matthew Hatton, who carried his brother’s coffin into Manchester Cathedral, shared his thoughts in an emotional interview. The 44-year-old expressed disbelief over Ricky’s death, indicating he had never anticipated such a tragic outcome.

“I’ll be honest, I’ve always worried. I spoke with my partner all the time [about him] and we did worry a lot about Richard, obviously [with him] doing a lot of interviews and stuff like that,” Matthew revealed. He noted that while he sensed his brother’s struggles, he was reassured by Ricky’s regular consultations with professionals, highlighting a complex relationship of concern and hope.

Matthew reflected on Ricky’s perceived lack of purpose after retiring from boxing, stating, “He didn’t seem to have a purpose now” or a “vision” for the future. He noted that while Ricky had recently been in a better state compared to earlier years, the news of his passing was still a significant shock.

In the weeks leading to his death, Ricky had not reached out to Matthew, a silence Matthew attributed to his brother’s busy schedule. After learning of the tragic news, Matthew sought solace with their parents, retreating from the outside world.

Ricky’s son, Campbell, also remarked on his father’s state prior to his death, suggesting he had been in a remarkably positive place compared to previous times. “He was the best any of us have ever seen him. He had mellowed with age,” Campbell shared. This poignant reflection portrays a layered narrative of Ricky’s life—one filled with hope and underlying struggles.

Prior to his passing, Hatton was reportedly preparing for a sensational return to the boxing ring, a testament to his enduring connection with the sport that defined his career. The stark reality of his untimely death resonates deeply, serving as a reminder of the hidden battles many individuals face.

This tragic chapter in the Hatton family’s story underscores the complexities of mental health in sports, revealing how, despite outward appearances of stability and success, the spectre of personal despair can remain hidden until it is too late.
