Matt Hardy responds to viral naked photo: 'I was young and needed the money'

Matt Hardy’s old photo goes viral following CM Punk’s playful post

A recent resurgence of a revealing photograph featuring WWE legend Matt Hardy has captured the attention of wrestling fans, as the image surfaced online. The snapshot, dating back to 1999, depicts the 51-year-old Hardy in a state of undress, with only a championship belt held in his teeth, reports BritPanorama.

The unexpected revival of this throwback moment arose when Hardy responded humorously to the picture going viral, quipping on social media, “I was young and needed the money!” His light-hearted reaction reflected the spirit of nostalgia that often characterizes the wrestling community.

The incident traces back to a cheeky post by CM Punk after his recent victorious night at the Elimination Chamber event. Punk celebrated by sharing an image of himself posing similarly nude, adorned only with his championship belts, following a successful title defense against Finn Balor in Chicago. His wife, AJ Lee, also made headlines, returning to the ring to clinch the Women’s Intercontinental Championship in her first solo match in over a decade.

Punk’s playful tribute harkened back to a 2019 moment when wrestlers Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch posed similarly after their WrestleMania triumphs. The implication of Hardy’s earlier photo was clear, yet the surprise overwhelmed many as fans simultaneously revisited Hardy’s past antics.

The original photo has since garnered nearly 100,000 views, illustrating the ongoing cultural resonance of the Hardy Boyz—one of wrestling’s most iconic tag teams. Despite their considerable fame and success across multiple promotions, including WWE, TNA, and NXT, the brothers remain noteworthy omissions from the WWE Hall of Fame, a fact that has not diminished their legacy within the sport.

Although both Hardy and his brother Jeff have pursued various opportunities outside of WWE, Matt expressed interest in making a return, stating, “I think we do want to do the WWE Hall of Fame. I think we would like maybe one last hurrah with WWE and that could even be possible while working with TNA too.”

In an era where wrestling nostalgia thrives, Hardy’s viral photo serves as a reminder of the captivating narratives and self-aware humor that underpin the wrestling world. How the past intertwines with the present is central to both fanfare and the long-running legacy of characters like Hardy, a persistent figure in wrestling’s evolving story.
