Mason Mount earns praise for supporting Leny Yoro after tough outing
Mason Mount earned widespread praise for his response to Manchester United team-mate Leny Yoro’s difficult afternoon at Selhurst Park, after the young defender conceded a penalty in the club’s 2–1 comeback win over Crystal Palace, reports BritPanorama.
Yoro, whose foul on Jean-Philippe Mateta handed the hosts their opening goal from the spot, was substituted before the hour mark following a challenging first-half display. United trailed at the interval but produced a far more assertive second half under Ruben Amorim, turning the match around through goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mount.
Yet it was Mount’s support for the 20-year-old after full time that drew most attention online. Broadcast footage showed Mount putting an arm around the defender and walking with him towards the away end, seemingly offering encouragement after a difficult outing. Supporters applauded the gesture; one fan wrote: “Captain MM7.”
Though the midfielder’s finish proved decisive, social media discussion quickly centred on his treatment of Yoro after the final whistle. Another fan commented, “Good on Mount, Yoro is young and this will be part of his growth. But he still needs support.” Further comments noted how Mount’s actions were commendable during a challenging moment for the young talent.
Yoro’s mistake attracted scrutiny during the half-time analysis on TNT Sports, with Joe Cole and Peter Crouch highlighting the defender’s positioning in the build-up to the penalty. Cole remarked, “It’s just so clumsy. He’s got the wrong side of him. You’ve got to sort your feet out; he’s tripped over his own feet.”
The youngster has been heavily involved since joining United and, despite flashes of his prodigious ability, has endured a demanding run of fixtures in recent weeks. Amorim, who has repeatedly stressed the need for patience with younger players, substituted him shortly after Palace’s opener in an effort to stabilise the defence. Mount’s intervention, however, ensured the post-match narrative was not solely defined by Yoro’s error.
United’s win lifted some pressure after a difficult run, with Amorim emphasising the significance of the second-half response. The Red Devils are next in action against West Ham on Thursday night (8pm).
In an age where players often feel the weight of criticism and social media scrutiny, Mount’s gesture stands out. It’s a reminder that in professional football, even the toughest tests can bring out the best in a team’s spirit.
