Mason Greenwood eyes England return as he shines in France

Mason Greenwood is reportedly ‘obsessed’ with the idea of playing for England again, with the forward currently shining in France with Marseille, reports BritPanorama.

The forward transferred to Ligue 1 during the summer transfer window of 2024, after a year at Getafe on loan from Manchester United. Since his move, he has displayed remarkable form, scoring 31 goals in 51 appearances and establishing himself as one of the top players in the league.

It has been five years since Greenwood made his only England appearance, which was in a narrow victory over Iceland. Shortly thereafter, he was sent home after breaching the UK’s strict coronavirus regulations during the height of the pandemic in 2020.

In January 2022, Greenwood faced serious charges, including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. However, those charges were dropped, clearing the way for his return to professional football.

With his current success at Marseille, the Daily Mail reports Greenwood has become ‘obsessed’ with the ‘impossible dream’ of representing England again. Despite being eligible to play for Jamaica, he has yet to switch allegiances, as his aspirations for England remain alive.

However, his chances of a national team recall appear slim. Both Greenwood and his potential availability have not been on manager Thomas Tuchel’s radar. In September, Tuchel stated, “He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team.”

Jamaican manager Steve McClaren has also expressed interest in incorporating Greenwood into the squad, yet noted that the player is hesitant to commit. “We expected him to be coming to this camp… but he’s not going to commit at this time to anybody,” McClaren stated.

Currently, Greenwood is enjoying some rest as Marseille looks ahead to their upcoming match against Nice on November 21, a critical fixture in their pursuit of the Ligue 1 title, where they sit two points behind reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.

It’s a curious path for someone with such undeniable talent; as he eyes a return to the England fold, it remains clear that the intersection of personal ambition and broader footballing narratives continues to shape his career in unexpected ways.
