Marc Guehi joins Manchester City from Crystal Palace
Manchester City have secured the services of England defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in a deal worth an initial £20 million, reports BritPanorama.
The 25-year-old centre-back has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract, committing to the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.
After finalising the transfer, Guehi expressed his relief and excitement about the move, stating, “I’m very proud and very excited to get started. I’m very grateful to God.”
The Palace captain underwent a medical on Sunday following the agreement on personal terms, concluding months of speculation about his future.
Guehi expressed admiration for his new club, declaring, “I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad of players.” He also voiced his determination to develop at the highest level, saying, “I’ve always been obsessed with getting better and to improve.”
His arrival addresses a significant defensive shortage for Pep Guardiola’s side, as Josko Gvardiol is sidelined for the rest of the campaign due to injury, alongside Ruben Dias and John Stones.
The situation became severe enough that City recalled academy prospect Max Alleyne from his loan spell at Watford a fortnight ago to provide cover.
Guehi represents the club’s second acquisition of the January transfer window after the £64 million signing of winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth earlier this month, bringing City’s total outlay this window to approximately £84 million.
This transfer concludes a saga that began last summer, during which Guehi was close to joining Liverpool on deadline day for £35 million before Palace withdrew from negotiations. Arsenal and Bayern Munich had also been monitoring the player, reportedly keen on acquiring him on a free transfer come the summer.
Following Saturday’s defeat at Sunderland, Palace manager Oliver Glasner expressed his frustration with the club’s hierarchy: “We feel that we’re being abandoned. Selling our captain one day before a game – there is no understanding for this.”
As discussions around player transfers continue to dominate headlines, Guehi’s move embodies the complexity of modern football operations, where squad changes can alter the dynamics not just of a team but of entire seasons.
