Matheus Cunha scores stunning late winner for Manchester United against Arsenal
Matheus Cunha delivered a remarkable late goal in the 87th minute to secure Manchester United a thrilling 3-2 victory over Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening, reports BritPanorama.
The Brazilian substitute received a pass from Kobbie Mainoo and curled a magnificent shot from approximately 25 yards, finding the bottom corner and sealing a vital win for United.
This result serves as a significant blow to Arsenal’s title bid, marking their first home defeat of the season. Just moments before Cunha’s decisive strike, the Gunners appeared ready to equalise, but United’s resilience ensured they left with all three points.
Arsenal initially dominated the match, taking the lead just before the half-hour mark. Martin Ødegaard’s shot deflected off United defender Lisandro Martínez and into the net, giving the hosts an early advantage. However, a defensive error from Martin Zubimendi set the stage for United’s comeback as Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on a misplaced pass, equalising with a composed finish past David Raya.
United built on this momentum following the interval. Just five minutes into the second half, Patrick Dorgu’s powerful strike hit the underside of the crossbar, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead. Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta responded by substituting four players in quick succession, which seemed to work in the 84th minute when Mikel Merino found the net following a corner delivery from Bukayo Saka, levelising the score at two apiece.
Yet, the home team’s celebration was short-lived. Cunha’s spectacular late goal delivered a significant emotional blow to Arsenal, who now face mounting pressure after a run of three winless Premier League games, having recently drawn against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool.
This defeat leaves Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table reduced to four points, while United’s victory marks their first league triumph at the Emirates since 2017, also ending Arsenal’s impressive 17-match unbeaten home streak.
The win elevates Manchester United into fourth place in the Premier League standings, overtaking both Chelsea and Liverpool, while casting doubt on Arsenal’s title aspirations as the season approaches its climax.
In a match of fluctuating fortunes, it serves as a stark reminder of how unpredictable football can be — moments of brilliance and error intertwined, illustrating that the title race remains wide open as the campaign progresses.
