Manchester United set to resume contract negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo
Manchester United are set to resume contract discussions with Kobbie Mainoo after Casemiro confirmed his departure from Old Trafford at the conclusion of this season, reports BritPanorama.
Mainoo, a product of United’s academy, had previously reached an agreement on fresh terms last year, but former manager Ruben Amorim did not approve the deal. With 18 months remaining on his current contract, which includes an option for an additional year, his wages are still below those of several senior squad members.
Interim manager Michael Carrick has reintegrated the young midfielder into the first team, effectively terminating any prospects of a temporary move to Napoli that had been under consideration. Mainoo’s situation at the club had grown increasingly uncertain under Amorim, who selected him to start only once this campaign – in a Carabao Cup match at Grimsby Town – before his dismissal.
The media frequently questioned Amorim about Mainoo’s limited involvement, which even prompted a public display from his brother, Jordan Mainoo-Hames, who attended a match at Old Trafford in December wearing a shirt bearing the message “Free Kobbie Mainoo.” Carrick’s appointment has changed the narrative, as he has expressed consistent admiration for Mainoo’s abilities and publicly stated that the club should build around homegrown talent.
Carrick had previously noted in conversations that the club needs to embrace players who have developed through their academy, indicating that players like Mainoo should play a pivotal role moving forward. “To have a talent like that, as he’s shown already, you’ve got to have players like that,” Carrick remarked, advocating for a project centred around Mainoo.
While Carrick described Mainoo as more attack-minded, he played the youngster in a deeper role during the recent 2-0 victory over Manchester City. This followed a noted performance in which Mainoo was credited with registering an impressive 77 pressures, demonstrating his capability within a midfield trio alongside Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes.
The 33-year-old Brazilian’s exit paves the way for considerable midfielder recruitment this summer, with United reportedly targeting up to four new signings. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba lead their shortlist, while Casemiro’s next destination may include interest from LA Galaxy along with several clubs from MLS, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil.
