Manchester United consider Michael Carrick for caretaker role
Manchester United are set to approach Michael Carrick over the possibility of taking charge until the end of the season, reports BritPanorama.
The Red Devils decided to sack Ruben Amorim on Monday, with the 40-year-old cut loose less than 24 hours after a 1-1 draw with Leeds. Following that showdown, Amorim publicly suggested he wasn’t receiving adequate support from the club’s hierarchy.
He was dismissed shortly thereafter, with United officials Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada informing him of the decision. In the interim, Darren Fletcher has been appointed to oversee Wednesday night’s challenging away match against Burnley at Turf Moor.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Carrick, a former United midfielder, is currently a free agent after leaving Championship side Middlesbrough last summer. He previously managed three matches as the club’s interim manager in 2021, securing victories against Villarreal and Arsenal while drawing against Chelsea.
Carrick’s connection with United dates back to the summer transfer window of 2006, when he joined from Tottenham for approximately £18 million. During his playing career, he won numerous trophies, including five league titles and the UEFA Champions League, under Sir Alex Ferguson.
As for a permanent replacement, Oliver Glasner is reportedly the frontrunner, with former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, Unai Emery, Gareth Southgate, and Kieran McKenna also emerging as candidates for the position.
Former United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has emphasized the importance of making the right appointment this time around. “They could very well still get into the Champions League spot,” he noted, before adding that as a title contender, the club remains distant from where they need to be.
This latest managerial change once again underscores the challenges faced by Manchester United in recent years, as they continue to seek stability and success on the pitch.
