Manchester United’s decision on Casemiro remains firm
Manchester United remain resolute in their decision to part ways with Casemiro when the current campaign concludes, despite the Brazilian midfielder’s impressive recent displays, reports BritPanorama.
The 34-year-old netted the opener in Sunday’s fixture against Aston Villa, taking his season tally to seven goals, with six of those coming from headers. Following his strike, Casemiro celebrated before the Stretford End faithful, repeatedly gesturing towards the club crest on his jersey.
Yet sources have confirmed to the BBC that the club will not reconsider their position on the former Real Madrid star, who revealed his impending departure back in January. The decision stems from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s determination to slash expenditure at Old Trafford.
The 73-year-old minority stakeholder had previously expressed disbelief at the midfielder’s annual salary of £18.2 million. Casemiro’s current deal, worth £350,000 per week, will expire at the end of the season, at which point he becomes available as a free agent.
United opted against activating an extension clause in his contract, with the club keen to press ahead with their broader squad restructuring plans. The veteran requested that his departure be announced publicly in January to prevent any uncertainty as the season progressed.
United supporters made their feelings clear during the match, chanting “one more year, Casemiro” in response to his goal celebration, before repeating the plea as the midfielder made his way towards the tunnel after the final whistle. Teammates have also voiced their desire for the Brazilian to remain at the club. Captain Bruno Fernandes and young defender Leny Yoro both stated following the Villa encounter that they hoped Casemiro would continue at Old Trafford.
However, their appeals appear unlikely to influence the club’s thinking, with sources indicating United have no intention of revisiting their stance on the midfielder’s future. Interim head coach Michael Carrick has indicated there will be no reversal regarding Casemiro’s situation at the club. “When something is decided it makes it a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation,” said Carrick.
The former United midfielder praised the departing Brazilian’s contribution throughout the campaign. “The impact he’s had has been terrific, through his influence within the team and with big moments and goals,” he added. Carrick also acknowledged the touching scenes between Casemiro and the home supporters following Sunday’s victory, remarking, “There was a nice moment at the end with the supporters. He’ll enjoy that one.”
