Manchester United in advanced negotiations to sign Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes

Manchester United have entered advanced negotiations to secure the signature of Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, with a deal valued at around £69million, reports BritPanorama.

The Magpies’ crushing Champions League exit against Barcelona, losing 8-3 on aggregate, has reportedly opened the door for the Brazilian midfielder’s departure from St James’ Park.

Old Trafford officials view the 28-year-old as the ideal candidate to fill the void left by Casemiro’s impending exit. However, Real Madrid’s long-standing admiration for the dynamic midfielder threatens to complicate United’s pursuit, setting up a potential battle between two of European football’s biggest clubs for his services.

Casemiro’s impending departure will create valuable squad space and free up significant wages that can be redirected towards incoming talent. Guimaraes has established himself as a key figure at Newcastle since arriving from Lyon in January 2022 for around £40m, amassing 189 appearances and contributing 31 goals whilst earning the captain’s armband.

Both United and Guimaraes himself share a keen interest in completing the transfer, which should facilitate relatively straightforward negotiations between the two Premier League sides. Real Madrid’s interest presents a significant obstacle to United’s ambitions for the midfielder, as the Spanish giants have tracked Guimaraes for several years.

United’s requirement for a comprehensive midfield overhaul extends beyond the pursuit of Guimaraes. Manuel Ugarte is also on the club’s list of players available for transfer as part of the summer restructuring, having struggled to establish himself since his move from PSG in the summer of 2024.

While Casemiro has identified Guimaraes as the ideal successor to carry the midfield mantle at United, further recommendations include pursuing Wolves midfielder Andre, with both Casemiro and captain Bruno Fernandes advising the club on potential signings.

The pursuit of Guimaraes highlights the ongoing transformation at United, where the search for a dynamic midfield presence could signal a new era for the club. As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on how this situation unfolds, with the stakes particularly high for a club looking to reclaim its status among Europe’s elite.

In the grand chess game of transfers, Guimaraes’ potential move is not just about filling a gap; it’s a statement of intent from a club eager to reposition itself at the forefront of English football. How this plays out remains to be seen, but the interplay of ambition between Manchester United and Real Madrid is certain to add further intrigue to the summer window.
