Manchester United fans plan major protest against ownership

A Manchester United fan group has escalated its protest against Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with 6,000 supporters expected to march in a demonstration against the ownership at Old Trafford. The 1958, an independent Manchester United Supporters Coalition, anticipates large crowds to gather before the upcoming home game, increasing the pressure on Ratcliffe and the Glazer family, reports BritPanorama.

The American family, who controversially took control of the club in 2005, have faced continuous backlash from fans throughout their tenure. Ratcliffe, who became a co-owner in February 2024, has increasingly come under fire as supporter discontent grows.

The 1958 confirmed that the protest will coincide with United’s Premier League game against Fulham on February 1, aiming to surpass the attendance of over 5,000 who participated in a prior demonstration against Arsenal last May. Organisers claim this will be the largest opposition yet directed at both the Glazers and Ratcliffe.

A spokesperson for The 1958 stated, “Jim Ratcliffe chose to get into bed with the Glazers and, in our opinion, is helping to keep them in charge. Twenty-one years of a debt mountain, mismanagement and financial greed is 21 years too long. Enough is enough.”

The spokesperson further pointed out the frustration felt by supporters, commenting, “We will not be complicit. Jim Ratcliffe, you have chosen your side, and it is not ours. You now stand shoulder to shoulder with the Glazers. You are no saviour.” They expressed the sentiment that the club has become a “laughing stock resembling a circus” under current ownership.

Plans for the Fulham fixture’s protest were announced in the wake of Ruben Amorim’s dismissal following a disappointing period in charge. Despite a promising start for new manager Michael Carrick, the supporters remain focused on the ownership issues plaguing the club.

The 1958 coalition has a history of organising such protests, and they recently consulted with fans on whether to demonstrate at the onset of the season. Their response, led by a sense of urgency regarding ownership, clarified that it is not merely about recent match results but rather the broader challenges of management.

“We have been down this path of false hope too many times. History shows what happens at our club with the dysfunctional ownership model we have. They are like a boomerang, and we cannot move on until they are gone,” the spokesman concluded, underscoring the persistent discontent among fans regarding their club’s leadership.

As tensions rise, the upcoming demonstration could mark a significant moment in the ongoing struggle between Manchester United supporters and their management, highlighting a fanbase united in its desire for change.
